# The generative AI amendment

ISO/IEC 22989:2022/FDAmd 1 is Amendment 1 to the AI concepts and terminology standard. Its subject is Generative AI. ISO records it at stage 50.00 on 18 September 2026, the final text received or FDIS registered for formal approval. This site uses 16 February 2027 as a planning date, labelled an estimate, not an ISO commitment.

- Final Draft Amendment

- Edition 1

- Stage 50.00

- Planning date 16 Feb 2027

- Base standard 60 pages

## What the public record establishes

The amendment exists, it applies to ISO/IEC 22989:2022, its subject is generative AI, and it is a Final Draft Amendment in the approval phase. The catalogue gives its committee as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, artificial intelligence, its ICS codes as 35.020 and 01.040.35, and its reference as 88145.

The life cycle is public. The project was approved on 27 October 2023, the committee draft was registered in October 2024, the DIS ballot ran for twelve weeks from 25 August 2025, the full report approved the DIS for registration as an FDIS on 24 August 2026, and the final text reached stage 50.00 on 18 September 2026.

## What the public record does not establish

The full text is not public. ISO sells the Final Draft Amendment, and its ISO record offers a preview through the Online Browsing Platform; the full text is not published there and ISO publishes no list of the terms it adds or changes. This site does not guess them. It gives you the 2022 baseline that the amendment builds on, the stage record, and a plan that can absorb the text when it becomes public.

ISO also publishes no date for stage 50.20, for stage 60.00 or for publication. The planning date above is a working target from the scout date, not a date ISO has recorded.

## Why a terminology amendment matters to a governance lead

The vocabulary is the part of an AI management system that other documents quote. When a definition moves, the policy sentence, the inventory field, the supplier schedule and the assurance argument that borrowed it may no longer say what their authors thought. The work is not to memorise the new words. It is to know which of your artefacts rely on the old ones.

## How this site handles the gap

Every term page states the public 2022 entry in our own words, with its clause citation. Every page says what it does not claim. The free check reads your vocabulary practice against the baseline, and the dated plan works back from the earlier of your review and the planning date. The watch sends the diff when the ISO record moves.

A second amendment is also open. ISO/IEC 22989:2022/CD Amd 2 is at stage 30.20, committee draft consultation initiated, reference 93144. It is a separate document and is not part of this record. Its existence is a reason to keep the vocabulary under a cadence rather than treat one amendment as a one-off.

## Common questions

Is the amendment published?
No. It is at stage 50.00, the final text received or FDIS registered for formal approval. Publication is stage 60.60 and has no date in the public record.
Does the amendment replace ISO/IEC 22989:2022?
No. It amends it. The base standard remains in force, and the amendment changes or adds to its text when it is published.
Can I read the amendment now?
ISO sells the Final Draft Amendment, and its record offers a preview. The full text is not published in the Online Browsing Platform. This site does not reproduce it and does not invent its content.
What is the key date based on?
A planning date 120 days from the scout date of 19 October 2026, chosen for this site and labelled an estimate. ISO records the amendment at stage 50.00 on 18 September 2026 and has published no date for the FDIS ballot, for publication, or for the end of the transition. The date is a planning target, not an ISO commitment.
Will the new terms appear in ISO/IEC 42001?
Not automatically. ISO/IEC 42001 is a separate management system standard. A term used in both is meant to carry the same meaning, but the amendment does not rewrite 42001.
